2. Set Engine to Idle
Let the engine idle. Do not rev it. The idle should be within factory spec. If you have a dial-back timing light, set the dial to zero initially. Point the light at the timing marks and squeeze the trigger.
3. Read the Base Timing
The strobe will “freeze” the mark on the balancer. In the flashing light, you’ll see the mark appear stationary against the fixed pointer. Compare the reading with your service manual: for example, “10 degrees before top dead center (BTDC) at 800 rpm.” If the mark aligns with 10°, base timing is correct. If not, adjust.
4. Adjust the Distributor (or ECU Timing)
On a conventional distributor, loosen the hold-down bolt slightly (enough to rotate the distributor by hand but not so loose it moves by itself). If you have a dial-back light, you can measure total timing at a specific rpm (often 3000-3500 rpm is used). Total advance (base + mechanical + vacuum) should not exceed the engine's safe limit, usually around 34-38° BTDC for small-block V8s, but verify with your build specs.
How Timing Affects Launch Performance
The initial launch is a compromise between traction and power. Too much advanced timing at low rpm can cause the engine to “push” against the starter and bog, or cause wheelspin if the torque hits abruptly. Too little timing leaves power on the table and the engine may feel flat off the line.
For street/strip vehicles, many tuners set base timing on the conservative side (e.g., 8-10° BTDC) to avoid detonation under heavy load at low rpm, then let the mechanical advance bring in the rest as rpm climbs. For race-only cars with higher octane fuel and good traction, advancing base timing slightly (12-14°) can sharpen response. The only way to know is to test and use the timing light to verify changes.
Launch-Specific Timing Tuning
- Boggy launch: The engine dips in rpm when you drop the clutch or hit the gas. Try advancing base timing 2 degrees and retest.
- Tire spin on green: You have too much torque too quickly. Retarding base timing 2 degrees can soften the hit and help the tires bite.
- Detonation under load: You hear a pinging sound during the first 60 feet. Immediately back off timing (retard) by 2-4 degrees. Check fuel octane and mixture first.
- Engine stumbles after shift: May indicate the total timing curve is too aggressive or the vacuum advance is adding too much at part-throttle. Timing light reveals the curve.

- Not warming the engine: Many engine components (like the mechanical advance springs) are temperature sensitive. Check timing only at operating temp.

Maintaining Consistent Launches with Timing
Once you find the ideal timing for your launch, record the settings and mark the distributor position with a paint marker. For vehicles with a removable chip or tune, save the calibration file. Regularly recheck timing with the light because distributor hold-down bolts can loosen, or the crank damper can slip on the rubber ring (a common issue with old balancers). If you see the timing mark is wandering or unsteady, replace the harmonic balancer immediately.
Combine your timing adjustments with consistent throttle application, tire pressure, and suspension settings. The timing light is one tool in your tuning arsenal—use it every time you make a change to your engine’s ignition system.
